Zornasco: Parish Church and Via Crucis<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The parish church, with the annexed bell tower<\/strong> and the small churchyard<\/strong>, embellished by a <\/span><\/span>Via Crucis, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>unique in Valle Vigezzo<\/strong>, is at the foot of a rocky wall at the top of Zornasco town.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The history of the parish church<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In accordance with the requirements of the believers, Zornasco’s parish was separated from that of Malesco in 1616<\/strong>. A primitive oratory (1457<\/strong>) <\/span>devoted to worship,<\/span><\/span> already existed in the town. So the small building was expanded in three successive moments till the present form (in <\/span>Doric style), starting from 1662.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dedication<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The parish church of Zornasco is dedicated to St. Bernard of Menton<\/strong>, celebrated in June, depicted on a canvas in the apse and a statue inside the church.<\/span><\/p>\n

Architecture and Art<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The church has a single aisle<\/strong> with three side chapels<\/strong>, two adornments with altars and the other dedicated to the baptistery.<\/p>\n

Inside there are two precious paintings<\/strong>: the adoration of the Wise Men<\/em> (Cav. Del Sole di Milano) and S. Peter in constraints<\/em> of the Vigezzo’s artist Giacomo Rossetti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 1935 the vault was decorated by Baranzelli, from Verbania.<\/p>\n

Outside the parish church, there is a small porch and, on the south wall, is still visible an ancient solar clock<\/strong>.<\/p>\n[\/spb_text_block] [spb_text_block title=”Churchyard and Via Crucis” pb_margin_bottom=”no” pb_border_bottom=”no” width=”1\/1″ el_position=”first last”]\n

Like in all the churches of the past, around the walls, there was the cemetery<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In order to allow expansion work, the cemetery was, for a time, moved upstream, but the current position, <\/span><\/span>a bit <\/span><\/span>moved away with respect to the town area, is due to the 1804’s Napoleonic laws on the cemeteries (Decree of Saint Cloud).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The churchyard in the southern part is encircled by a wall, where lie eight artistic chapels of the Via Crucis<\/strong>, dated back to the early ‘800<\/strong>, someone painted by Lorenzo Peretti of Buttogno and Carlo Gaudenzio Lupetti of Prestinone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
